School Summary

King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School was founded in 1862 and is a selective boys-only grammar school. It is the oldest selective school in the area. While it is a boys’ school, girls are admitted into the school’s sixth form. 

The school was formerly known as Handsworth Grammar School but changed its name in September 2017 when it was admitted into the Foundation of the Schools of King Edward VI. The school also became an academy in 2017.

Other exam and entry information

  • The maths exam follows the National Curriculum for Year 6. Calculators are not permitted.

  • The English exam tests both comprehension and writing skills.

  • The CEM Select is an online assessment that tests verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning.

  • The online registration form must be filled out before the end of October in Year 6. A non-refundable registration fee of £75 is required, along with a copy of the applicant's birth certificate and recent school report.

  • The assessment exams will all be sat in the November of Year 6.

  • Following the exam, applicants will be invited to sit an interview with a senior staff member.

Exam length — 72 minutes.

The CAT4 test is composed of 8 short tests assessing the following subsections of the four areas above:

  1. Figure Classification (10 mins)

  2. Figure Matrices (10 mins)

  3. Verbal Classification (8 mins)

  4. Verbal Analogies (8 mins)

  5. Number Analogies (10 mins)

  6. Number Series (8 mins)

  7. Figure Analysis (9 mins)

  8. Figure Recognition (9 mins)

Pass mark —  There is not a fixed pass mark for the admissions test. On completion of the test, all candidates receive an age-adjusted and standardised score. The average score is 100. Schools will also be able to see each child’s score and the time taken for each test section.

Other exam information:

  • The CAT4 test is administered by GL Assessment and is an online assessment that examines verbal, non-verbal, spatial and quantitative reasoning.

  • In addition to a passing mark, students will need to provide satisfactory references from their previous school, and a successful parent and student interview will need to be conducted with the headteacher.

  • The assessment day takes place in January of the year of entry.

Exam Information

Exam style — CAT4.

Exam types:

  • CAT4 (verbal, non-verbal, spatial and quantitative reasoning)

Exam length — 72 minutes.

The CAT4 test is composed of 8 short tests assessing the following subsections of the four areas above:

  1. Figure Classification (10 mins)

  2. Figure Matrices (10 mins)

  3. Verbal Classification (8 mins)

  4. Verbal Analogies (8 mins)

  5. Number Analogies (10 mins)

  6. Number Series (8 mins)

  7. Figure Analysis (9 mins)

  8. Figure Recognition (9 mins)

Pass mark — There is no fixed pass mark for the admissions test.

Other exam and entry information

  • Burgess Hill Girls uses a cognitive abilities tests, similar to CAT4. CAT4 is an online assessment that examines verbal, non-verbal, spacial and quantitive reasoning.

  • The online registration form must be filled out online before the closing date. A non-refundable registration fee of £100 is required.

  • Hurstpierpoint College will request references from the applicant's current school.

  • Applicants will be invited to sit an interview with a senior member of staff.

  • Acceptance letters will be sent shortly after the assessment exam is complete.

Exam style — CAT4 and school’s own exam

Exam types:

  • School’s own creative writing exam

Exam length — 72 minutes (for CAT4) and 45 minutes (for creative writing).

The CAT4 test is composed of 8 short tests assessing the following subsections of the four areas above:

  3. Verbal Classification (8 mins)

  4. Verbal Analogies (8 mins)

  5. Number Analogies (10 mins)

Pass mark —  There is no fixed pass mark for the admissions test. On completion of the tests, all candidates receive an age-standardized score. The average score is 100. Schools will also be able to see each child’s score and the time taken for each test section.

Other exam information:

  • The CAT4 test is administered by GL Assessment and is an online assessment that examines verbal, non-verbal, spatial and quantitative reasoning.

  • The online application form must be submitted before taking the assessment, along with a £100 non-refundable application fee (or £200 for boarding).

  • Assessment performance will determine if the candidate is accepted, and acceptance of the offer should be made in writing with the acceptance fee payment.

  • Candidates with exceptional scores will be considered for an academic scholarship.
