Catchment area —  St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School does not have a catchment area but places preference on 11+ test grades and Catholicism. 

Over-subscription policy —  Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1. Baptised Catholic girls, from a Practising Catholic family (evidenced by a Certificate of Catholic Practice from their Parish Priest) and who have made their First Holy Communion in the Catholic Church (normally evidenced by a remembrance of First Holy Communion) who are looked after or have previously been looked after - and are ranked amongst the top 200 places in the entrance test.

  2. Baptised Catholic girls, from a Practising Catholic family (evidenced by a Certificate of Catholic Practice from their Parish Priest) and who have made their First Holy Communion in the Catholic Church (normally evidenced by a remembrance of First Holy Communion) who are in receipt of the Pupil Premium — and are ranked amongst the top 200 places in the entrance test. A maximum of 32 such children (25% of the total) will be admitted, these are allotted according to rank order in the test if there are more than 32.

  3. Baptised Catholic girls, from a Practising Catholic family (evidenced by a Certificate of Catholic Practice from their Parish Priest) and who have made their First Holy Communion in the Catholic Church (normally evidenced by a remembrance of First Holy Communion) in rank order beginning with the highest.

  4. Baptised Catholic girls in rank order (in the entrance test) beginning with the highest.

  5. Girls of Other Christian Denominations in rank order (in the entrance test) beginning with the highest.

  6. Other Looked After girls.

  7. Other girls in receipt of Pupil Premium.

  8. Any other girls.

Please note that this is a Catholic school and therefore evidence of Catholic beliefs is required when applying to the school’s entry tests. The school requests that you submit:

A certificate of Catholic Practise — This usually requires the signature of a priest but due to COVID-19 this is not currently required.

School Summary

St. Michael’s Catholic Grammar School was founded in 1908 under the trusteeship of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus. It is a Catholic, all-girls, selective grammar school in Barnet, North London.

It became a Voluntary Aided Grammar School in September 1958.  Boys were allowed to join the school’s 6th Form from 2009.

The school describes itself as “a Catholic school in which Gospel values inform all aspects of community life.”

  • The results of all tests will be combined to decide the rank order of applicants.

  • If students overall score is the same, to break the tie students’ scores in the verbal reasoning test will be used.
