Oversubscription policy — Before the application of oversubscription criteria, students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) which names the school and who have passed the assessment will be admitted. As a result of this the published admissions number will be reduced accordingly.

 Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be determined as follows:

  1. Looked after children and previously looked after children within England.

  2. Children previously looked after from outside England and subsequently adopted.

  3. Not more than (10%) 24 places will be allocated to children, who do not qualify under any other Criterion, based on the nearness of their permanent home address point and the address point of the School at the time applications are required.

  4. Applicants who are children of a parent or legal guardian who is a permanent member of the school staff.

  5. Children with a sibling on the School’s roll in Years 7 to 12 and who is reasonably expected to be on the School’s roll when the child starts.

  6. Not more than (10%) 24 places will be available for applicants with a proven aptitude in music in descending order of merit as determined by the School’s assessment arrangements. 

  7. Not more than (25%) 60 places will be available by reference to academic ability in descending order of merit as determined by the School’s assessment arrangements.

  8. Nearness of the child’s permanent home address point and the address point of the School. 

Thereafter, under criteria (6) and (7), applicants will be placed in categories as follows: 

(i) Those resident in the area defined by postcodes beginning with WD17, WD18, WD19, WD23, WD24, WD25, WD3, WD4, WD5, HA6-2 and HA6-3. This is our priority catchment area.

ii) Other candidates

 97% of pupils in these categories will come from the school’s priority catchment area.

School Summary

Rickmansworth School was established in 1954 and is a mixed, partially-selective secondary school in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. The school became an academy in 2011 and is part of the South West Herts School Grammar School Consortium. 

Rickmansworth School specialises in science and the arts. In September 2018, the school expanded thanks to a £3.5 million grant. Since then, the School has undergone a major refurbishment programme including the construction of a new Sixth Form Centre, English classroom suite, a specialist Film Studies suite (including a cinema), and a specialist theatre/drama studio, an extended dining hall, refurbished swimming pool and Sports Hall.

Exam Information

Exam style — South West Herts Consortium Schools Exam (GL Assessment).

Exam types:

  • Verbal reasoning 

  • Mathematics

Exam length — 2x 1 hour exams.

Pass mark — N/A - No minimum score will be required to gain admission, places are offered strictly in descending order of each applicant's standardised test score.

Other exam information — 

  • There will be two separate exam papers - one for maths and one for verbal reasoning.

  • Both tests take approximately one hour to deliver and are provided by GL Assessment.  

  • Both exams are multiple-choice with a separate answer sheet.

Scores will be standardised. 

Please note - Rickmansworth School is a partially selective school, meaning only 35% of available places in year 7 will be available based on academic ability each year.
