Exam Information

Exam style — Selective Eligibility Test (SET) for the Sutton Schools and Wilson’s Grammar School second stage entrance test.

The schools have not announced their exam provider in order to make the exams fair for all candidates.

Exam types:

  • English

  • Mathematics

Exam length — 40-50 minutes each.

Pass mark — The pass mark is decided by the school after the tests have been marked.

Please note that parents are not informed of the exact score their child achieved. They are only told whether their child has passed.

Children who are unsuccessful will sometimes be informed of their marks.

Other exam information —

  • There are two stages of exams.

  • Maths and English exams are taken back to back on the same day.

  • In the first stage of exams, all questions are multiple choice in both the English and Maths exams.

  • The second stage consists of an extended English writing task and a standard Maths paper.

  • Candidates record their answers on a separate answer sheet.

  • The scores from all tests are combined to create the overall entrance test score. The rank order of the entrance tests will be determined on the basis of the aggregate scores of the SET and the two elements of the second stage Entrance Examination for Wilson’s School in the ratio 1:2:2.

Scores will be standardised.

Please note that candidates must achieve the minimum qualifying mark in the SET (first stage of testing) to be invited back to sit the second stage tests.

Candidates must pass all exams to be eligible for entry to Wilson’s Grammar School.
