Catchment area —  Wirral Grammar School for Girls does not have a set catchment area. However, priority is based on location and distance from the school. Preference will be given to children with the shortest distance from their home to the school as measured by Wirral Local Authority’s computer mapping system.

Oversubscription policy — In each of the identified criteria below, a requirement of applicants is that they have passed the entrance examinations.

Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be determined as follows:

  1. Girls in public care.

  2. Girls with a valid medical reason supported by a doctor’s letter. Details must be given on the preference form and will be verified by a medical officer of the Area Health Authority.

  3. Up to 15 places for children on Free school Meals at the time of application who achieve the qualifying score in rank order of distance from the school. Details must be given on the preference form and will be verified.

  4. Girls who have a sister attending the school at the time of application with a reasonable expectation that they will be attending at the same time of the start of the new academic year.

  5. Priority may now be given to members of staff employed by the school provided that they have been employed for a minimum of two years and/or are recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skills shortage.

  6. By reference to geographical factors, that is distance from the home address to Wirral Grammar School for Girls. Distances will be measured from the home to the school gate nearest to the child’s home using the shortest road route unless it is possible to use a footpath which is considered by the school to be a safe walking route.

School Summary

Wirral Grammar School for Girls was established in 1931 and is an all-girls grammar school in  Wirral, Merseyside. The school became an academy in 2011 and specialises in languages, humanities and science.

At this high-performing school, results are consistently high, and well above the national average. Between 98% and 100% of pupils achieve five or more grade A*–C GCSEs each year. The school has been at the top local and national league tables for many years. Wirral Girls also have highly successful and competitive sports teams, orchestras, and choirs.

Exam style — GL Assessment for the Wirral Consortium of Schools.

Exam types:

Exam length — 2x 60 minute exams.

Pass mark —  Changes every year. 

Other exam information — 

  • The test is in two separate booklets, each one covering verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills, as well as mathematics. 

  • Both tests are timed and consist of multiple-choice questions. 

  • Students are required to mark answers on a separate answer sheet, which is scored by computer.

  • There will be a break between the tests.

Scores will be standardised.
