How Our Primary 6 English Tuition Works

What Is the NCEE?

The SSPA stands for the Secondary School Places Allocation system — the official process for allocating Secondary 1 places in Hong Kong’s public-sector schools. As part of this process, students sit the SSPA English Language examination, which forms an important part of their overall allocation score and can be decisive in securing a place at their preferred secondary school.

The English Language paper is typically taken by Primary 6 pupils (ages 11–12) in the final term of their primary education. It includes sections on Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary in Context, Grammar and Usage, and occasionally short writing tasks (depending on the school). Our tuition focuses specifically on helping students maximise their performance in all English components, ensuring they are confident and fully prepared for exam day.

What’s Covered in the Workshops?

Each workshop rotates between the following NCEE English and verbal aptitude skill areas:

📚 Reading Comprehension
Students work through SSPA-style fiction and non-fiction passages, followed by mixed-format questions. Tutors focus on evidence-based reading, inference, identifying main ideas, author’s purpose, and vocabulary in context — all essential skills for high marks.

✏️ Grammar and Sentence Structure
These sessions help students master grammar and usage through fill-in-the-blank, sentence transformation, and error correction tasks — matching the format and difficulty of the SSPA paper.

🗣️ Advanced Vocabulary
A rich vocabulary boosts performance in comprehension and vocabulary-in-context questions. Sessions expand students’ word banks with high-utility words and equip them with strategies to deduce meaning from context.

🔁 Synonyms and Antonyms
Students practise identifying words with nearest and opposite meanings, a common vocabulary-in-context task, to build both accuracy and speed under exam conditions.

📝 Composition & Writing Skills
Workshops guide students through planning, organising, and writing clear, well-structured compositions. Focus areas include crafting strong introductions, developing ideas logically, using varied sentence structures, and applying accurate grammar and vocabulary — skills that benefit both the SSPA writing component and overall English proficiency.

How Long Is One Workshop?

All of our workshops are around 45 minutes in length. In these workshops, your tutor will share some background information about themselves and our workshops with new students. This is followed by 40 minutes of teaching time.

In all sessions, students can only see, hear and message the tutor — no one else. Camera and microphone access are not required.

Class notes are sent out 24 hours after each workshop, containing key learning points and the answers to the class test.

Is each workshop stand-alone?

Yes, every workshop is stand-alone and self-contained. This means you can sign up for any of our workshops at any time.

How do I book and pay?

Simply choose a class from our schedule above and enter your personal details once prompted. All our paid workshops accept payment through Zoom via PayPal. To join, simply register for your chosen workshop via the Zoom form.

For all sessions, you will receive a confirmation email after registration which contains the link to join the workshop at the specified time. You will be sent a reminder email one hour before the workshop.

Who will run the sessions?

All of our workshops are run by our team of excellent super-tutors, all of whom have passed competitive school entrance exams such as the 11 Plus in the UK, attended Russell Group Universities, and have regularly tutored on The Exam Coach team within the last 2 years.

Why are The Exam Coach’s English Tuition sessions different?

The teaching style The Exam Coach has developed aims to make the learning experience as enjoyable and effective for students as possible. Our founder (James Davey) wanted to replicate the qualities of the best teachers he encountered during his own education — high-energy, enthusiastic teachers, who told stories and gave clear, memorable explanations. Every Exam Coach tutor is trained to deliver in this style within an online learning environment.

What do I need to do to ensure the lesson goes smoothly?
