How Our PSLE Tuition Works

What Is the PSLE?

PSLE stands for the Primary School Leaving Examination, which is a national exam taken by students in Singapore at the end of Primary 6, typically around age 12. It assesses students in four subjects:

  • English

  • Mathematics

  • Science

  • Mother Tongue (such as Chinese, Malay, or Tamil)

The PSLE is an important milestone that helps determine which secondary schools students can apply to, based on their results.

What’s Covered in the Workshops?

The content of each session varies between:

✏️ English Writing

Creative writing is a major part of the PSLE English Paper 1. In these workshops, students learn how to plan and structure their compositions effectively, using engaging openings, vivid descriptions, and logical storylines. These sessions also focus on using exam-style questions as prompts to help students improve their grammar, punctuation and spelling, as well as their overall ability to write descriptively in a way that would be awarded marks in the PSLE.

📚 English Comprehension

Comprehension is a key component of the PSLE English Paper 2. In these sessions, students are guided through a PSLE-style text by their tutor. Then they will answer 10 questions, focusing on elements such as the process of elimination, minimising mistakes and literary devices.

🗣️ English Vocabulary

A wide vocabulary supports every aspect of PSLE English — from comprehension and grammar to composition writing. These sessions focus on teaching high-frequency PSLE words and their meanings, helping students expand their word bank and strengthen their language use in context.

How Long Is One Workshop?

All of our workshops are around 45 minutes in length. In these workshops, your tutor will share some background information about themselves and our workshops with new students. This is followed by 40 minutes of teaching time.

In all sessions, students can only see, hear and message the tutor — no one else. Camera and microphone access is not required.

Class notes are sent out 24 hours after each workshop, containing key learning points and the answers to the class test.

Is each workshop stand-alone?

Yes, every workshop is stand-alone and self-contained. This means you can sign up for any of our workshops at any time.

How do I book and pay?

Simply choose a class from our schedule above and enter your personal details once prompted. All our paid workshops accept payment through Zoom via PayPal. To join, simply register for your chosen workshop via the Zoom form.

For all sessions, you will receive a confirmation email after registration which contains the link to join the workshop at the specified time. You will be sent a reminder email one hour before the workshop.

Who will run the sessions?

All of our workshops are run by our team of excellent super-tutors, all of whom have passed competitive school entrance exams such as the 11 Plus in the UK, attended Russell Group Universities, and have regularly tutored on The Exam Coach team within the last 2 years.

Why are The Exam Coach’s PSLE Tuition sessions different?

The teaching style The Exam Coach has developed aims to make the learning experience as enjoyable and effective for students as possible. Our founder (James Davey) wanted to replicate the qualities of the best teachers he encountered during his own education — high-energy, enthusiastic teachers, who told stories and gave clear, memorable explanations. Every Exam Coach tutor is trained to deliver in this style within an online learning environment.

What do I need to do to ensure the lesson goes smoothly?

  1. Please install Zoom in advance of your workshop and make sure it is working. This will help to ensure that the session starts promptly for your child and the other students. (See below for guidance on how to install Zoom).

  2. You will receive an invitation link by email in advance of the session. This will be your login link. It will be sent to the email address which you used to book. Make sure you have this link ready and you’ve logged into Zoom under the same email address.

  3. Please ensure that your child is in front of their screen and ready to go 5 minutes before the official session start time, this is so they have time to organise themselves appropriately.

What technology does my child need to participate?

All they will need is access to a laptop, tablet or smartphone and a free Zoom account.
