Catchment area —  Entry to the School is based firstly on the scores gained in the Entrance Test.

Pupils who achieve an equal score which is over the qualifying minimum score are then prioritised based on the following criteria:

  1. Any Children who have a Statement of Special Educational Need or an Education Health and Care Plan where the School has been named by the Local Authority will be admitted automatically.

  2. Children in care or who have been in care.

  3. Children who live within four miles of the school (in a straight line from the front door of your child’s home address (including flats) to the main entrance gate of the school). The closer you live, the higher the priority.

  4. Children eligible for Pupil Premium who live within 10 miles of the school.

  5. Children of permanent members of the school staff who have been continuously employed by the school for a period of not less than 2 years.

School Summary

Herschel Grammar School is a selective, co-educational grammar school in Slough. It is part of both the Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools and an over-16 consortium with Baylis Court School and The Westgate School. Herschel  also runs the Herschel Pupil Training Centre for pupils from Slough and neighbouring local authorities.

The school has had many names over the years, including:

  • Slough Technical School

  • Slough Technical High School (to 1972)

  • Herschel High School (1972 to 1984)

  • Sir William Herschel Grammar School (from 1984)

  • Herschel Grammar School

The school specialises in science, maths, computing and technology. In 2012, it became an academy. In 2020, GCSE candidates achieved their  highest ever results, including a record-breaking 8-9 (A*) pass rate of 46%.

Exam Information

Exam style — GL Assessment for The Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools.

Exam types:

  • Verbal Reasoning

  • Non-Verbal Reasoning

  • Mathematics/Numerical Reasoning

  • English

Pass mark —  A standardised score of 111 is the minimum score required to be eligible for consideration for admissions.

Other exam information — Both exams will cover a combination of all topics and consist of multiple choice style questions. Both papers include verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and maths.

Upton Court Grammar School uses the same 11+ Entrance Test as the other grammar schools in the Slough Consortium (Herschel Grammar School, Langley Grammar School, St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School and Upton Court Grammar School). If you are applying to multiple schools in this category, your child only needs to take the tests once.

Scores will be standardised.
