Pass mark —  There is no fixed pass mark for the exam.

Other exam information:

  • The CEM Select is an online assessment that tests verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning.

  • These two examinations are done on the assessment day. Common entrance examinations are completed at a later date for those wishing to apply for a scholarship or receive an offe4r stating ‘subject to common entrance’.

  • During the assessment day, a group interview will take place. Non-assessed workshops will also take place, allowing the girls to get to know each other and also get a glimpse of life at the school.

  • The common entrance examinations are set by ISEB.

  • The assessment day usually takes place in October prior to the year of entry. The common entrance examinations take place in January.

  • Our assessment for entry to St George’s is held at the end of November.

  • The first exam is a mix of maths and English in one paper.

  • The second exam is an online CEM Select test which assesses maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning skills.

  • On exam day, girls will also be interviewed by the headmistress.

  • The school also requires a reference from the child’s previous school.

  • Verbal reasoning (common words, antonyms, word combinations, letter transfer, number codes, etc.).

  • Non-verbal reasoning (shape analogies, classes like, horizontal codes, etc.).

Exam length — 4 exams totalling 2.5 hours.

Pass mark —  There is not a fixed pass mark for the admissions test. On completion of the test, all candidates receive an age-adjusted and standardised score. The average score is 100. Schools will also be able to see each child’s score and the time taken for each section of the test.

If a child does well in their 11+ pre-test, they will usually be offered a place, contingent on them then passing the common entrance exam at 13+.

Other exam information

  • The tests cover English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning separately.

  • All tests are completed online.

  • All questions are in multiple-choice format.

  • The English test takes 25 minutes, mathematics 50 minutes, non-verbal reasoning 32 minutes and verbal reasoning 36 minutes.

  • The four tests can either be taken together or at separate times. They can be taken in the candidate's own school, at the senior school for which he or she is entered or at an independent testing centre.

Herschel Grammar School is a selective, co-educational grammar school in Slough.   • The assessments will take place on a taster day at the school. The applicants will spend the morning sitting their assessments, then spend the remaining time with a buddy around the school. They are welcome to stay for lunch and a play.

  • A copy of the applicant's updated school report will be required as part of the application process.

  • Maths (in line with the National Curriculum up to Year 5).

  • Verbal reasoning (common words, antonyms, word combinations, letter transfer, number codes, etc.).

  • Non-verbal reasoning (shape analogies, classes like, horizontal codes, etc.).

Exam length — 4 exams totalling 2.5 hours.

Pass mark —  There is not a fixed pass mark for the admissions test. On completion of the test, all candidates receive an age-adjusted and standardised score. The average score is 100. Schools will also be able to see each child’s score and the time taken for each section of the test.

If a child does well in their 11+ pre-test, they will usually be offered a place, contingent on them then passing the common entrance exam at 13+.

Other exam information

  • The tests cover English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning separately.

  • All tests are completed online.

  • All questions are in multiple-choice format.

  • The English test takes 25 minutes, mathematics 50 minutes, non-verbal reasoning 32 minutes and verbal reasoning 36 minutes.

  • The four tests can either be taken together or at separate times. They can be taken in the candidate's own school, at the senior school for which he or she is entered or at an independent testing centre.

  • All candidates are registered by the senior school(s) for which they are entered.

  • Test results are available to all senior schools which register the same candidate and therefore a candidate need only sit the tests once for a range of senior schools.

  • An assessment fee of £24 applies and is non-refundable.

  • Parents are encouraged to visit the school at an open event.

  • The assessment exams are held in the November/December of year 6. Applicants will also be required to sit a private interview on the same day and participate in lessons.

  • The acceptance letters will be sent before Christmas. The letter must be returned by the specified closing date and a deposit fee of £500, which goes toward the tuition fee.

Oversubscription policy — Entry to the School is based firstly on the scores gained in the 11+ Entrance Test.

Pupils who achieve an equal score which is over the qualifying minimum score are then prioritised based on the following criteria:

  1. (Previously) Looked After Children with a score up to 5 marks below an eligible score.

  2. Children in care outside of England with a score up to 5 marks below an eligible score.

  3. Children with Pupil or Service Premium living within the catchment area with a score up to 5 marks below an eligible score.

  4. Children whose permanent home address is within the catchment area.

  5. Children whose permanent home address is NOT within the catchment area; Evidence of all of the above will need to be submitted and approved in order for a child to be admitted.

School Summary

Reading School (or Reading Grammar School) is an all-boys grammar school with optional boarding. There are no fees for day students, and the boarders only pay for their boarding costs. The boys are only allowed to board during the week and return home at weekends.

The school is one of the oldest in England; it was founded in 1125 as the school of Reading Abbey. It gained academy status in 2011 and specialises in humanities and science.
