Catchment area —  Lancaster Royal Grammar School does have catchment area but candidates will only be considered eligible for admission if they achieve a qualifying score in their 11 Plus exams.

The School draws its day pupils not only from Lancaster but also from places further afield within travelling distance. As a state boarding school, they also accept boarding applications from any area beyond or within our day catchment area.

Pupils who achieve the minimum level in the test AND who have a statement of special educational needs which names Lancaster Royal Grammar School or an education, health and care plan which names Lancaster Royal Grammar School will be admitted prior to the application of the admission rules.

Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1. Looked after or previously looked after children who achieve the minimum level or above in the entrance test or who score up to and including 15 marks below the minimum level.

  2. Pupils who live within the school’s priority catchment area, who are eligible for the Pupil Premium via Free School Meals  and who achieve the minimum level or above in the entrance test or who score up to and including 15 marks below the minimum level.

  3. Pupils who live within the school’s priority catchment area and who achieve the minimum level or above in the entrance test.

  4. Pupils who live within the school’s residual catchment area, who are eligible for the Pupil Premium via Free School Meals, and who achieve the minimum level or above in the entrance test or who score up to and including 15 marks below the minimum level.

  5. Pupils who live within the school’s residual catchment area and who achieve the minimum level or above in the entrance test.

  6. Applicants for day places who live outside the residual catchment area of the school and who achieve the minimum level or above in the entrance test.

The school’s priority catchment area is defined by the boundaries of the City of Lancaster.

School Summary

Lancaster Royal Grammar School (LRGS) is an all-boys grammar school with optional boarding and a mixed sixth form. The school has boarding provisions for up to 180 boys. In 2011, it became an academy.

LRGS specialises in technology and languages. It’s won many awards including  the Investors in People and the Sportsmark Gold awards. Around 40% of GCSE entries in 2019 achieved one of the top two grades (9 or 8) and 70% achieve one of the top three grades (9 to 7).

LRGS consistently places in the top 2% of UK state schools at GCSE and A-level.  It is also one of the leading state boarding schools in the UK.

Other exam information — 

  • Maths exam lasts 50 minutes and contains 50 multiple choice questions. 

  • Verbal Reasoning exam lasts 50 minutes and consists of 80 multiple choice questions.

  • English exam for 45 minutes and contains 56 multiple choice questions. 

  • The English paper contains here are two sections — one that tests spelling, punctuation and grammar, and one that requires students to read an extract of text and then answer questions about the passage.

Please note Non-Verbal Reasoning is not tested at Lancaster Royal Grammar School.
