Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School (BRGS) was founded in 1701 as Newchurch Grammar School. It moved to its current site in 1913 and was renamed after the two towns on either side of Waterfoot — Bacup and Rawtenstall. The school is a mixed, selective grammar school and sixth form.

BRGS specialises in mathematics and computing. It’s also a designated Training School. It became an academy in 2012. The school has a reputation for great exam results and it constantly ranks well in school league tables.

Lancaster Royal Grammar School (LRGS) is an all-boys grammar school with optional boarding and a mixed sixth form. The school has boarding provisions for up to 180 boys. In 2011, it became an academy.

Exam length — 3 exams of 45-50 minutes.

Other exam information — 

  • Maths exam lasts 50 minutes and contains 50 multiple choice questions. 

  • Verbal Reasoning exam lasts 50 minutes and consists of 80 multiple choice questions.

  • English exam for 45 minutes and contains 56 multiple choice questions. 

  • The English paper contains here are two sections — one that tests spelling, punctuation and grammar, and one that requires students to read an extract of text and then answer questions about the passage.

Please note Non-Verbal Reasoning is not tested at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School.
