Over-subscription policy —  Candidates will only be considered eligible for admission if they are deemed to be of selective ability as a result of the testing process. There is no predetermined pass mark, instead places will be allocated in rank order.

 Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be determined as follows:

  1. Looked After Children/Previously Looked After Children.

  2. Children attracting Pupil Premium.

  3. Other ‘qualified’ children, in test rank order, until 150 places are filled.

School Summary

Pate’s Grammar School was founded in 1574 with  funding left to Corpus Christi College, Oxford by Richard Pate. The school is now a mixed, selective grammar school in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. It became an academy in 2010. 

Ofsted described the school as ‘Beyond outstanding’, Pate’s regularly ranks in the top 10 of the national school league tables. In 2019, 42% of all GCSE grades were at a Grade 9.

Exam style — GL Assessment.

Exam types:

  • Verbal reasoning 

  • English

  • Mathematics

  • Non-verbal reasoning

Exam length — 2x 60 minute exams.

Pass mark — Changes each year. 

Other exam information — 

  • All three tests are multiple choice.

  • In the first paper, students will be tested on English and verbal reasoning.

  • In the second paper, students will be assessed on non-verbal reasoning and mathematics.

Scores will be standardised.
