The Spires College Designated Area

Oversubscription policy — There are up to 60 selective places available in each year group. If any of these places remain following the allocation process they will be used to increase the number of non-selective places in the College.

 Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be determined as follows:

  1.  Looked after Children or children who were previously looked after but immediately after being looked after became subject to an adoption, residence or special guardianship order.

  2. Children whose home address is inside the designated area.

  3. Children whose home address is outside of the designated area.

When there are more applications than available places, categories 2 and 3 above will be

prioritised in the following order:

  1. A sibling already attends The Spires College.

  2. The application is for a child of a member of staff (as per criteria set out in the School Admissions Code).

  3. All other applications.

School Summary

The Spires College was established in 2002 and is a mixed, partially selective, grammar school in Torquay, Devon. The school has a specialised unit for students with hearing impairments. 

The Spires College encourages  students to get involved in every aspect of College life beyond the classroom: extra-curricular clubs and trips are always available. Their students leave the College as rounded, confident, independent young adults, ready to take up their places in society and equipped with the means to seize their futures.

Exam Information

Exam style — GL Assessment.

Exam types:

  • English

  • Mathematics

Exam length — 2x 50 minute exams.

Pass mark — Changes each year. There is no threshold score that has to be achieved in each skill tested – it is the overall score that will be used to rank the student.

Other exam information — 

  • All questions will be multiple choice.

  • All the tests are set to reflect what has been taught in the primary schools according to the National Curriculum for Year 5.

  • There will be a short break between the two papers.

Scores will be standardised.
