Who this course is for?

• Year 5 students preparing for imminent 11+ exams.

• Year 5 students who:

  • Have ideas but struggle to structure them.

  • Write inconsistently under timed conditions.

  • Need to improve technique and targetting of the mark scheme to achieve higher marks.

Exam style: suitable for all 11+ exam styles which test creative writing (Kent Test, CSSE, Sutton Stage 2, Tiffin Stage 2, Future Stories and independent/school written exams).

Worksheets, model answers, class recap notes and homework are sent via email before the start of the course. These can either be printed or viewed digitally.

Tuition Method

• Sessions are run in small groups (typically 8–10 students).

• Each lesson is interactive, focused on learning and applying writing techniques within an exam context in order to target the mark scheme.

• Group work helps students identify and use strengths from other students’ writing.

• The tutor presents optimal methods, the children are then instructed to adapt the method to their own preferred style.

• Emphasis is placed upon showing students how they can level up each sentence they write to score more marks. This is done through a combination of analysing their own writing against the mark scheme, modelling the teacher’s tweaked version of the student’s work as well as modelling the writing of other students.

• After every session:

  • Students complete a structured homework task.

  • Work is carefully marked and returned (usually within 48 hours, often sooner).

  • Each child receives personalised audio feedback to assist fast uptake and knowledge retention. This ensures that every student receives clear, individual guidance on exactly what to improve and how it can be done.

The Tuition Team

This course will be delivered by The Exam Coach tuition team. All of the team have:

1. Passed competitive exams such as the 11 Plus.

2. Attended a Russell Group University in the UK.

3. Taught our 11 Plus exam preparation curriculum on a regular basis within the last year.

In every session, two members of staff will always be on hand: the tutor and a technical support assistant. This means sessions always start smoothly and on time with a seamless teaching experience throughout.

The lead tutor for each session may vary, the marking feedback will also be delivered by a separate tutor. This offers students a variety of teaching styles and perspectives, whilst at the same time, all teaching being framed within the techniques discussed in the course.

Course structure

During an 11+ creative writing exam, students are required to write in continuous prose in order to showcase their grasp of written English. Questions will often ask students to write a creative story or description of a given topic.

In this course, we will walk students through how the 11+ creative writing mark scheme is structured and what they can do to ensure they will be awarded marks for their writing. Importantly, the students will be given memory aids to help them deliver what examiners will reward highly according to the mark scheme. The course is structured as follows:

Day 1 — Creative Writing Technique Overview

Day 2 — Creative Writing Technique Practice

Day 3 — Types of Creative Writing

Day 4 — Features of Creative Writing

Day 5 — Mark Scheme Review, Top Tips and Recap of our Creative Writing System

Throughout, focus will be given to answering the specific question at hand and how to ensure all elements of creative writing are included. Additional important areas such as: punctuation, literary devices, range of vocabulary, structure, Therefore, they will go into their creative writing exam with a clear idea of what they need to demonstrate they can do in order to achieve a high mark.

This course is designed as a structured system, not isolated lessons. Each lesson builds on the last through worksheets to be completed during the session and follow-up homework.

This course replaces some of the inconsistencies associated with weekly individual tutoring with a structured system. This creates a consistent cycle of improvement:

Course schedule

Delivered during the May Half-Term to provide a focused period of preparation ahead of exam season.

Dates: Monday 25th – Friday 29th May (5 days).

Time: 11:00am – 12:30pm (UK time).

Session length: 90 minutes, with a 5 minute break in the middle.

Format: live online sessions. All sessions include follow-up homework and feedback. In exceptional circumstances, recordings are available if a session is missed. Live attendance is a requirement of the course.
