• Year 5 students preparing for imminent 11+ exams.

Tuition Method

• Sessions are run in small groups (typically 8–10 students).

• Each lesson is interactive, focused on learning and applying writing techniques within an exam context in order to target the mark scheme.

• Group work helps students identify and use strengths from other students’ writing.

• The tutor presents optimal methods, the children are then instructed to adapt the method to their own preferred style.

• Emphasis is placed upon showing students how they can level up each sentence they write to score more marks. This is done through a combination of analysing their own writing against the mark scheme, modelling the teacher’s tweaked version of the student’s work as well as modelling the writing of other students.

• After every session:

  • Students complete a structured homework task.

  • Work is carefully marked and returned (usually within 48 hours, often sooner).

  • Each child receives personalised audio feedback to assist fast uptake and knowledge retention. This ensures that every student receives clear, individual guidance on exactly what to improve and how it can be done.

The Tuition Team

This course will be delivered by The Exam Coach tuition team. All of the team have:

1. Passed competitive exams such as the 11 Plus.

2. Attended a Russell Group University in the UK.

3. Taught our 11 Plus exam preparation curriculum on a regular basis within the last year.

In every session, two members of staff will always be on hand: the tutor and a technical support assistant. This means sessions always start smoothly and on time with a seamless teaching experience throughout.

The lead tutor for each session may vary, the marking feedback will also be delivered by a separate tutor. This offers students a variety of teaching styles and perspectives, whilst at the same time, all teaching is consistently framed within the techniques discussed in the course.

Course structure

During an 11+ writing exam, students are required to write in continuous prose in order to showcase their grasp of written English. Questions can ask students to either write a creative story and description about a given topic, or a structured persusasive letter or essay in order to demonstrate their reasoning skills.

In this course, we will walk students through the key persuasive and informative writing techniques examiners reward generously. Students will work through how to plan, prepare and write a high-scoring persuasive and/or informative writing piece. All elements of both persuasive and informative writing will be studied (including structure, tone and key persuasive writing techniques). Students will have plenty of opportunities to use their own opinions and practise creating persuasive arguments and informative pieces of their own. The course is structured as follows:

Day 1 — Persuasive Writing Technique Overview

Day 2 — Informative Writing Technique Overview

Day 3 — Examples and Sentence Crafting 

Day 4 — Features of Persuasive and Informative Writing 

Day 5 — Mark Scheme Review, Top Tips and Recap of our Creative Writing System

Most importantly, students will be given simple memory aids to help them deliver what examiners will reward highly according to the mark scheme. Therefore, they will go into their writing exam with a plan, and a clear idea of what they need to demonstrate in order to achieve a high mark.

A 25-minute writing task will be set as homework after each workshop and this will be marked by our tutors. You will receive your child’s marked work as well as personalised verbal feedback on each assignment, focusing on areas of improvement needed in order to hit all elements of a writing mark scheme. This feedback is normally around 5 minutes long per piece. Importantly, the tutor will not just say what the student should have done more of. Instead, they will show the student by adapting the student’s writing and giving concrete examples about what they could have written. The verbal feedback is usually around 5 minutes long per submission and is delivered as an audio file that can be played on a smartphone, tablet or laptop. Along with brief written corrections, the consumable audio recording ensures students are absorbing as much of the feedback given about their work as possible.

This course is designed as a structured system, not isolated lessons. Each lesson builds on the last through worksheets to be completed during the session and follow-up homework.

This course replaces the inconsistencies of weekly individual tutoring with a structured system, creating a cycle of improvement.

Course schedule

Dates: Monday 3rd – Friday 7th August (5 days).

Time: 9:00am – 10:30am (UK time).

Session length: 90 minutes, with a 5 minute break in the middle.

Format: live online sessions. All sessions include follow-up homework and feedback. In exceptional circumstances, recordings are available if a session is missed. Live attendance is a requirement of the course.
