How Our SHSAT Tuition Works

What Is the SHSAT?

The SHSAT stands for the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test, the entrance exam used to determine admission to New York City’s most prestigious public high schools, including Stuyvesant High School, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech.

The SHSAT is typically taken by 8th-grade students (ages 12–14) in the autumn of their final year of middle school. It consists of two main sections: English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. Our tuition focuses specifically on helping students maximise their ELA score.

What’s Covered in the Workshops?

Each workshop rotates between the following SHSAT ELA skill areas:

📚 Reading Comprehension
Students are guided through SHSAT-style fiction, non-fiction and poetry passages, followed by multiple-choice questions. Tutors focus on evidence-based reading, inference, author’s purpose, and vocabulary in context — all key skills needed to perform well on test day.

✏️ Revising & Editing
This part of the SHSAT ELA tests grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and clarity. In these sessions, students learn how to spot and correct common writing errors, improve sentence flow, and choose the most effective wording in context — just like in the SHSAT.

🗣️ Advanced Vocabulary & Language Use
A strong vocabulary helps students in both the Revising/Editing and Reading Comprehension sections. These sessions expand students’ word banks with high-utility academic words and strategies for deducing meaning through context.

How Long Is One Workshop?

All of our workshops are around 45 minutes in length. In these workshops, your tutor will share some background information about themselves and our workshops with new students. This is followed by 40 minutes of teaching time.

In all sessions, students can only see, hear and message the tutor — no one else. Camera and microphone access is not required.

Class notes are sent out 24 hours after each workshop, containing key learning points and the answers to the class test.

Is each workshop stand-alone?

Yes, every workshop is stand-alone and self-contained. This means you can sign up for any of our workshops at any time.

How do I book and pay?

Simply choose a class from our schedule above and enter your personal details once prompted. All our paid workshops accept payment through Zoom via PayPal. To join, simply register for your chosen workshop via the Zoom form.

For all sessions, you will receive a confirmation email after registration which contains the link to join the workshop at the specified time. You will be sent a reminder email one hour before the workshop.

Who will run the sessions?

All of our workshops are run by our team of excellent super-tutors, all of whom have passed competitive school entrance exams such as the 11 Plus in the UK, attended Russell Group Universities, and have regularly tutored on The Exam Coach team within the last 2 years.

Why are The Exam Coach’s SHSAT Tuition sessions different?

The teaching style The Exam Coach has developed aims to make the learning experience as enjoyable and effective for students as possible. Our founder (James Davey) wanted to replicate the qualities of the best teachers he encountered during his own education — high-energy, enthusiastic teachers, who told stories and gave clear, memorable explanations. Every Exam Coach tutor is trained to deliver in this style within an online learning environment.

What do I need to do to ensure the lesson goes smoothly?

  1. Please install Zoom in advance of your workshop and make sure it is working. This will help to ensure that the session starts promptly for your child and the other students. (See below for guidance on how to install Zoom).

  2. You will receive an invitation link by email in advance of the session. This will be your login link. It will be sent to the email address which you used to book. Make sure you have this link ready and you’ve logged into Zoom under the same email address.

  3. Please ensure that your child is in front of their screen and ready to go 5 minutes before the official session start time, this is so they have time to organise themselves appropriately.
