Parent’s Guide

Exam Information

Exam style — School’s own exam and CAT 4.

Exam types:

  • English (writing)

  • CAT4 (verbal, non-verbal, spatial and quantitative reasoning)

Exam length — 72 minutes.

The CAT4 test is composed of 8 short tests assessing the following subsections of the four areas above:

  1. Figure Classification (10 mins)

  2. Figure Matrices (10 mins)

  3. Verbal Classification (8 mins)

  4. Verbal Analogies (8 mins)

  5. Number Analogies (10 mins)

  6. Number Series (8 mins)

  7. Figure Analysis (9 mins)

  8. Figure Recognition (9 mins)

Pass mark —  There is no fixed pass mark for the admissions test. On completion of the tests, all candidates receive an age-standardized score.

Other exam information:

  • A non-refundable fee of £100 is paid for registration.

  • The school recommends interested applicants apply end of November of the year prior to the child joining year 7.

  • The school’s English paper tests the child’s creative writing abilities.

  • The CAT 4 is an online cognitive abilities test that assesses acquired skills in verbal, non-verbal, spatial and quantitative reasoning.

  • The entrance examinations are held in the January of the year 6.

  • Applicants will have an interview with the headteacher or senior member of staff as part of the assessment process. They will be asked to complete a personal ‘storyboard’ to showcase their hobbies achievements and interests.

  • A report from the child’s current headteacher will also be required.
