Oversubscription policy — Before the application of oversubscription criteria, students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) which names the school and who have passed the assessment will be admitted. As a result of this the published admissions number will be reduced accordingly.

Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1. Children in Local Authority Care or Previously in Local Authority Care.

  2. Children with a sibling at the school at the time of application or who will be still attending when the applicant is admitted.

  3. Child’s health reasons, supported by medical evidence, which requires the child to attend this school.

  4. Where the child resides within the access area. Priority given to those nearest the school.

  5. Nearness of child's home. Distance will be measured by the shortest available safe walking route between home and school as measured by Medway Council's Geographical Information System.

School Summary

The Howard School was founded in 1975 when Rainham Boys’ Secondary School and Gillingham Boys’ Grammar School joined together to create a new school. It was named after Dorothy Howard, a key member of the local community. Today the school is an all-boys bilateral school with mixed sixth form in Gillingham, Kent. The school has specialised in sports since 2007 and became an academy in 2014.

While the school is technically bilateral, it has not recruited any students via the 11+ Medway Test for many years. There is currently no grammar stream meaning admission is not dependent on the 11 plus entry exams at the moment but this may change.

The Howard School is the lead school in the Howard Academy Trust which works with other local schools and the community to make a difference to the lives of young people based on their values.

The school’s motto is “To Strive and Achieve is to Succeed”.

Ofsted rated this school as ‘good’ in 2016. Find their reports here.
